A mantra is used during meditation to assist you in creating a quieter and calmer level of thinking. First of all, the act of focusing on a mantra with repetition helps to quell and slow the rapid thoughts that are swimming around in your mind. Additionally, it helps create stillness and clarity allowing you to drop into your meditation. Thus, having a mantra to circle back to when our thoughts run away helps us to focus and settle in.

Mantra 1 – Rasa Hum – I Am The Essence of Life
At the heart of creation, there lies creative primal energy. This mantra helps us by creating the level of intelligence of Nature so we can manifest a supportive life force in our own lives and in the lives of others. It is in this space that we can manifest alignment and creative desires.
Mantra 2 – Yoyatah Hum – My Awareness is Infinitely Flexible & Fluid
The mantra Yoyatah Hum assists us with having an open, adaptable and fluid awareness and helps us to be receptive to the bounty the universe can bring to us. Detaching from preconceived notions and softening into allowance in our lives allows awareness to adapt to innate intentions and needs in our lives.
Mantra 3 – Sat Chit Ananda – Life is Absolute Bliss Consciousness
This mantra resonates with me from a gratitude space. Practicing gratitude opens us to positive beliefs, expanding our horizons and opening possibilities in our lives. Being life-affirming and nurturing, focusing on positive beliefs and connecting us to our higher selves fosters inner peace and creativity.
Mantra 4 – So Hum – I Am That
We are all connected to universal energy which constantly supports and nourishes us. Chanting the mantra ‘So Hum’ offers feelings of connectedness, safety, and support. Did you know, the act of adding “I Am” before your thought activates your sub-conscience mind to verify whatever came after ‘I Am’? In turn, this shapes our identities and beliefs about ourselves because ultimately we are what we think we are. Choose your ‘I Am’ wisely.
Try Saying ‘I Am:’
- Peace
- Love
- Supported
- Grateful
According to Yogapedia.com:
“The So’ham mantra has been used for thousands of years to identify oneself with the Universal Reality. In Tantra and Kriya yoga, it is known as ajapa japa — a constant awareness of the mantra, without chanting it. It is also believed that So’ham is an answer to Koham, meaning “Who am I?” The universe answers this question with So’ham, communicating that “You are the same as I am.” “
Mantra 5 – Ahem Prema – I Am Love
This mantra opens us to love. It comes from the Sanskrit, aham, meaning “I,” and prema, meaning “love” or “affection.” The meaning in our life is directed from our loving center, our true self. This mantra assists us in opening our hearts and finding situations where we can make a difference with our acts of love. While our acts of love are done selflessly we understand that the true benefits are obtained by both the giver and the receiver.
According to Yogapedia.com:
“To embrace this loving energy of the Divine, it is recommended that the yogi recite the mantra 108 times per day. That number is said to correspond to the number of energy channels, or nadis, through which prana flows in the body, connecting the chakras. The mantra chant should continue for 40 days in order to create change and affect the yogi’s consciousness on all levels.”
Of course, my favorite mantra of all is ‘Namaste’. ‘We are all one when we live from the heart.’
And I also really love “Shanti”. It just means “Peace”. And we could all use a little more peace in our lives and in the world.
With every breath we take, we are connecting to all living beings in the Universe and taking in the very same energy. Having a personal mantra or several helps to guide us and connect us with our inner beings and with the expansive Universe.
