These days there are so many choices for gathering our food, the grocery store, warehouse stores and restaurants, to name a few. The ease in which we can order online and the excess varieties there are in retail food markets allow us ease in purchasing and sourcing our food. But perhaps not scrutinizing our choices can lead to eating things that aren’t especially good for our health or the health of the planet. In this article will be a few food resources for you to check out.
After all, as the old saying goes, “You Are What You Eat”
If you take a closer look at the way our animal food sources are raised you may think twice about purchasing those items. If you’ve ever driven by a concentrated animal feedlot you know that there’s a noxious smell.
The smell is “Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gas arising from storage, handling and decomposition of animal waste from CAFOs. H2S is produced by anaerobic bacterial decomposition of protein and other sulfur containing organic matter.” (1) These greenhouse gases wreck havoc on our atmosphere, causing many problems for our environment. Not to mention we get toxic surface and groundwater pollution that are byproducts of raising animals in these conditions.
The concentrated animal feed lots make me want to yell out in protest, carry a sign, free the animals. I don’t do that though. I vote with my wallet. And you can too.
Fortunately, there’s more awareness today of problems associated with factory farmed animals and we’re seeing more and more sustainably raised meat, poultry, dairy and eggs in some of our grocery stores. There are also many web resources for sourcing these products as well.
